Powers on and off randomly, March 10, 2010
By Mike from Fort Lauderdale, FL

"I have two of these connected to computer. Sometimes they power on when the computer comes on, sometimes they don't. Sometimes after running for several hours, they just turn themselves off, even if the computer is still running, forcing me to turn them back on. I have missed many scheduled backups because of this."

This product damaged my View of Toshiba, March 5, 2010
By RJP94114 from San Francisco, CA

"When I first saw Toshiba selling 1 TB External Hard Drives, it was a no brainer based on my experience in the past with Toshiba that this was a good product and I bought it. I couldn't have been more wrong. This has been the most useless hard drive I've bought - shutting off after about 5 minutes of use or no use in the middle of doing things. To make matters worse, Toshiba had nothing on their site indicating they even sold the drive let alone any problem fix. This drive has sat on my shelf for 4 months now unused since I got it."

How to solve the problem with shutting down, March 3, 2010
By Bob from Irvine, Ca

"Hey guys I've had the same problem and thought about junking the drive. I've tried everything that is mentioned on this thread to no avail, but I think I may have stumbled into a moderate solution... Atleast for me. I download and started working with MediaMonkey for my massive library and ever since my drive doesn't shut down. It may have something to due with monitor my music folder constantly or something (not a techie), but it works for me. Kind of weird, but hope it helps. Just run MediaMonkey in the background and see if it works for you. I haven't tried the same thing with Itunes or WM, but it may work."

Don't, March 1, 2010
By Peterlaw from West Chester PA

"On a MAC it locks up the system everytime it goes to sleep. It seem that it is telling the computer that it is ejecting from the system then does not complete the process. hence it locks up the system requiring a restart."

TOSHIBA 1 TB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE, February 23, 2010
By bobby television from FALLS CHURCH, VA

"I've had the drive for a little over a week now. After a shaky start, it's performing very well as the backup drive for my Operating System.
The first thing I did was convert the drive from FAT32 to NTFS; that action seemed to confuse the Backup software, but since the backup doesn't use disk imaging, I wasn't planning on using that software anyway.
I also experienced the "disappearing" problem mentioned in so many of the reviews. My fix was this:
- Right Click the Taskbar on the bottom of the screen.
- Select "Properties".
- Select "Customize" in the TaskBar menu.
- If the two Toshiba icons display "Hide When Inactive", change them to "Always Show".
- Select "Apply" on the way out of this menu.

SOLUTION FOR UNWANTED SHUT-OFF, February 20, 2010
By bobby television from FALLS CHURCH, VA

"I noticed many complaints about the drive shutting off after 5 minutes. I had the same problem and here's what I did to overcome it:

-Right click the task bar at the bottom of the screen.
-select Properties.
-find the Notification Area and select "Customize".
-find the Backup Software icon, highlight it, and select "Always Show"
-do the same for the Toshiba Drive Monitor icon.
-select OK, then Apply.

So far this has kept the drives from shutting down or disappearing from My Computer.

Drive Sleeps/Not Mac Friendly, February 11, 2010
By Yocraig from USA

"This drive goes to sleep even while Im running apps that are on it. It also comes with a partition that contains the instructions and backup apps that I can't seem to erase. I tried two of the utilities but they crash on my Mac.

I suppose it would work as a backup drive that you didnt leave connected, but as additional online storage this drive should be avoided.

Can't view files, February 7, 2010
By pwrblnc from Las Vegas, NV

"I connected the hard drive to my desk top computer using a USB port and installed software as instructed. I then did a backup which went well. I can't view the files! It instructs to go to my computer then open toshiba HDD to view. Toshiba HDD does not exist in the My Computer files. I have searched everything. If I can't view the file on that hard drive, it is useless to me. Now that I have downloaded my entire computer on the silly thing, I'm afraid I can't send it back. Ouch!! Not happy here..."

Toshiba 1TB external Drive, January 30, 2010
By Fred from Bostonn, MA

"If you are looking strictly for a backup drive, this drive is fine. Just took it out of the box, reformatted to NTFS, and copied data to it. It copied at approx. 1 GB/minute (Copied 42 GB in 43 minutes on the first pass). If you are looking for more than just backup (DVR copy, etc...) then look at other products. Did not use the proprietary software, just did a Copy/Paste to back up my files. Very quiet."

great exterior, bad interior, January 21, 2010
By Cyrax from Milpita, CA

"It looks great, but it has serious issues with "sleep". If this device will decide to sleep (e.g. you dont use it for 5 mins or you've sent your PC to sleep) then the only way to wakeup this Toshiba disk is to power cycle it.

On Toshiba's support there is a "fix" that will remove VirtualCD partition and should make the disk to be Windows power management friendly ... but it only removes VirtualCD.

Pros:
- looks great!
- doesnt get hot (it has a nice "green" Samsung HD103SI drive inside)
- eSATA and USB
- you can get it quite cheap

Cons (only for USB connection - dont know about eSATA):
- cant be woke up by Windows as all other drives - you have to power cycle it
- goes to sleep even if you have an open document on this drive
- Windows Explorer can hang up when the drive goes to sleep - and will hang till you wakeup the drive manually
- annoying VirtualCD feature with a copy of Toshiba software (still you can remove it and loose all HDD content) - just a folder on the drive is usually enough
- installs "AutoTask" software on any PC you plug the drive in without asking a user
- there is no tool to configure or disable drive sleep time
- the most useless bundled software ever - e.g. Monitor is just a primitive version of disk's "Properties" dialog in Windows

So it can only be recommended if you are going to use the disk only occasionally, like "plug in, copy a file, unplug". Otherwise - look for alternatives.

Bad drive w/annoying shutdown "feature"., December 18, 2009
By thepete from NYC

"In all my years of owning external drives, I've never been more frustrated and perplexed by a drive's behavior. After a certain amount of time, after being accessed, the drive just shuts down--completely. Not into sleep mode, it doesn't stay mounted, it just cuts all power. This makes *NO* sense what SO ever. I am so angry because this feature has cost me DAYS of work. I can think of NO scenario where a hard drive that automatically shuts down due to disuse would be a useful thing. I challenge ANYone to come up with a justification for such a feature.

I like Toshiba as a brand, I have a 320GB portable external drive I use all the time and love (I plan to buy another), but stay away from the desktop externals!! ARG! TOSHIBA I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!

Too bad I had already put hundreds of gigs of data on this drive before I started running into trouble with it. I have no place to transfer off the data while I return this to Best Buy. What's worse is that I'm doing this project for a friend and I feel like I've let him down by choosing a lame hard drive. ARG.

aSATA problem fixed, November 12, 2009
By nickname

"The fix (in my case) was to cut a tiny bit of the rubber back from the connector so that it fits slightly deeper into the socket. The concave curve of the case prevents the cable from properly seating into the socket.
I trimmed about 1 mm back from each end and problem solved.!
Disc works well now on eSATA port.

Sleepy Hard Drive, November 4, 2009

"This hard drive is great as far as noise, but it shuts off after 5 minutes of idle.

To fix this create and run this batch file. Run it each time you want to keep the hard drive active.

To create the file, open notepad and save the file as keepalive.bat on your c: drive.

(NOTE: enter [these] as specified information and remove the brackets)

Dead on Arrival, November 3, 2009
By Retiree from Chicago, IL

"The unit lit up when turned on, but the drive was not recognized on a PC or a Mac. No quality control any more?

Customer service is found via Toshiba's website or toll-free number unless you use the term "Acclaim" (which did not appear on the box for this item).
